When the wheel was invented, we probably thought we created the ultimate moving contraption. At last we could get from place to place without much strain -- and a lot quicker. Of course we still had to depend on horse power, the four-legged kind -- for pulling wagons and such -- until we invented the steam engine, which propelled trains and other contraptions. Then came the combustible engine which sped up sea-faring vessels, inspired automobiles and eventually gave birth to planes with jet engines.
Now we can really move around. We can hopscotch across the globe in a day. In fact, sometimes we can get to our destination before we even leave. But, more often we hurry, hurry, hurry and wait, wait, wait. Moving about can be a nightmare or a dream.
Local busses operate in most cities and if your budget is low, it's the cheapest way to go. You should be aware, however, that in some countries, going on a local bus is an experience in itself. You might find yourself sitting next to livestock.
Taxis are the most expensive, unless you can share with someone going to the same place. Taxis have gotten a bad rap for being rip-off artists, however, some of my most unique discoveries were when I hired a taxi driver to be my guide. Just be sure before getting into a taxi in any country to get the fare established.
Inquire at Visitor Centers to see if tourist transport passes are available. Some include all modes of transportation (busses, trains and subways) for a one-fare price.
