Yakima Valley Travel Tip
Yakima Vintages & Other Collectibles
The Yakima Valley, long famous for its rich varietals of reds and
whites (including the new Lembergers and Syrah's) made at over 30
local wineries, has also a quiet industry of merchants offering vintage
furnishings and collectibles.
You'll never know what you'll find in the dozens of shops that
cater to the home furnisher or arts and crafts fancier. Whether
renovating from top to bottom, or simply wanting a distinctive piece to
mark the entrance way, the Yakima Valley has
some little known treasure troves, including
Fiddlesticks, Houses and Hedges, Yesterdays
Village, The Picket Fence, Green Gables,
Shopkeeper Ltd, and Country Crossings General Store. These are
filled to the brim with gifts and authentic pickings from attics, barns,
mountain cabins and even the tool shed. No ordinary tool shed, mind
you. Tool sheds here are large and full of farm implements, as this
region is the country's fifth
largest vegetable and fruit
producer.
For those who appreciate hand-crafted details or the beauty of
simple wood, there's rough-hewn furniture and all manner of fixtures
that Grandma would think as plain old, but to the younger homemaker,
are touches of quiet beauty calming a frenzied household.
Relics of farm life include apple-drying racks, pantry boxes, wash
buckets, claw foot bathtubs, painted earthenware, and hand-crafted
mantles.
On a bargain hunt, you could rescue old wooden tables, distressed from use and enriched with age, or metal gratings
tarnished to perfection. It's not uncommon to find artifacts from old dairies, including milk and butter churns, or
agricultural relics to liven up the garden.
Looking for a pedestal for a coffee table or planter? Architectural remnants are sitting in corners. Buy furniture in the
rough to retool into objects for today's living. Discover carefully preserved notions and linens once part of Grandma's
trousseau, or quirky lampshades with turn-of-the-century brocade tassels, fine quilting fabrics, teddy bears and dolls.
From Americana to elegant simplicity found in the Amish Collection store, Yakima is definitely a place for a "find."
