Getting Around Nassau
Nassau Travel Tip
The best way to explore downtown Nassau is on foot. Dozens of gift shops line Bay Street including the famous Straw
Market where piles of straw goods are sold among other things. I still have the hat I bought there 12 years ago, on
my first visit. If you want to explore the rest of the island, you might consider renting a car. Rentals are available in
Nassau and most major hotels, but remember, driving is by British rules, which means driving on the left side of the
road. (Which means pedestrians must look left before crossing the street.) You don't need anything but your home
drivers license if you're a short time visitor.
Taxi stands are also located in front of the major resorts or you can hail one down in the street. Taxi fares are regulated,
however, I'm in the habit of always checking fares before getting in the cab. Tipping is expected, usually about 15%
and surcharges apply to extra luggage and more than two passengers.
On my last visit, we decided to experience the local transportation. We took a jitney (a smaller than normal bus) to
Cable Beach. It only cost us 75 cents and it gave us the chance to mingle with the locals and tour through districts that
a tour bus is likely to avoid.
