Packing for Vancouver
Vancouver Travel Tip
When packing for Vancouver, a few items are essential, whatever the season: A raincoat with hat or umbrella, a sweater and good walking shoes. No, it doesn't rain all the time, but it could rain and you want to be ready and not let the weather stop you from exploring this beautiful city. And even when the sun shines, as soon as you step into the shade, the temperature drops several degrees, so a sweater in your backpack or around your hips comes in handy.
If your visit is in the winter months, the dampness in the air cuts right through you, even when the temperature isn't that low. (It's true, I have been in dry 20 F. temperatures and stayed warmer in my down parka and wool mittens and touque then in damp 40 F. degree temperatures in my raincoat and leather gloves.) The best clothing to combat this is skin-tight underwear, so add cosy cotton underwear to your list.
Vancouver is a city to explore on foot, therefore, good weather-proof walking shoes are essential.
Although most restaurants do not have a dress code, the sophisticated crowd likes to dress up in the evenings. So, women bring a space-age wrinkle-free evening dress (one you can roll up in a ball) and men bring dressy jeans or khackis and a silk shirt. (Even at the opera, very few guests are in ties and formals, but it's more a matter of personal taste.)
Vancouver has four seasons, however, other than a skimpy halter and shorts or a wool scarf and downfilled parka, Vancouverites wear the same apparel throughout the year.
