Orange Walk District
Orange Walk District is the second largest district of the six that make up Belize. The district is
diverse with lagoons,
marshes and deep tropical forests. The New River Lagoon is Belize's largest body of fresh water,
50 km long. Orange
Walk Town, near the northern tip of the district, is one of the largest commercial and farming
centers in the country.
Population is around 10,000 people. Orange Walk Town is not geared to tourism.
The Rio Bravo Research Station, located on 250,000 acres of prime tropical jungle is run by
conservationists
sponsoring "Programme for Belize." The station is dedicated to scientific research, agricultural
experimentation,
protection of indigenous wildlife and the area's Maya archaeological locations while creating
self-sufficiency through
development of ecotourism and sustainable rainforest agriculture. They expend with the help of
the Belize Audubon
Society, The Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund, a good effort in educating
Belizeans and ecospecialists
from abroad.
Other interesting tours in Orange Walk District, beside the trip to Lamanai Outpost Lodge, are
the Orchid Tours. One-
hundred fifty species of orchids grow wild throughout the country, including the black orchid, the
Belizean national
flower.
