Marietta
Established in 1863, Marietta sits slightly back of the banks of the Susquehanna River. Before
the flood of 1972, the town had begun to show its age. Buildings were looking worn and no-one
seemed to care much; but then, no one had much money. To make matters worse, the river rose
and nearly drowned the town. The damage and destruction from the flood was horrendous, but,
it seems that something good can come out of something bad. When the government stepped in
with much needed dollars to put the town back on its feet, Marietta's residents turned their
dilapidated buildings into historical treasures outside and inside. Store-fronts sparkle with fresh
paint and bright trim; museums hum with beautiful music boxes; antique shops bulge with dust-
free relics; and many private homes are unique B & B's. Like the Noble House, it is incredibly
furnished with heirloom family antiques. At Christmas time, Marietta's residents throw open
their doors to the public in a spicy and heart-warming candle-lit welcome. To be sure, this
simple little ex-lumber town is ready for company.
