Anguilla
Anguilla is located about 200 miles east of Puerto Rico, 100 miles east of the Virgin Islands, and 7 miles North of St.
Martin. It is 16 miles long and 3 miles wide at its widest point. The total area is 35 square miles. It is part of a chain of
young volcanic mountains that form all the Leeward and Windward islands.
It is the most northerly of the Leeward
Islands in the Lesser Antilles group of the greater West Indies group, a series of islands that stretches from the
southern tip of Florida in the United States to Venezuela in South America. Anguilla is a dependent territory of the
United Kingdom, although briefly, between 1967 and 1971, it was independent.
Formally separated from St. Kitts and
Nevis, the other islands in the Leeward group, Anguilla's main attraction is its geographical beauty. Tourism is its
biggest industry.
