The Big Island
The island of Hawaii in the state of Hawaii, is the largest island in the Hawaiian Islands
group - about 4,028 square miles in size, almost twice as big as the other islands combined.
Located at the south east
corner of the Hawaiian chain and appropriately nick-named the Big Island, the majority of the
140,000 inhabitants live on opposite ends of the Big Island, in and around the two major cities:
Kailua-Kona on the west side and Hilo on the east side. Although only 99 miles apart, climate is
vastly different in these two locations with Kailua-Kona, being lush and humid and Hino hot
and dry.
Besides the many highlights and attractions on the Big Island ( a couple of America's best
beaches { white sand Kauna'oa Beach and Hapuna Beach} are found on the Big Island), the rich
volcanic soil on the Big Island produces the rich, aromatic and famous Kona Coffee, a coffee
that is sold in the best coffee houses everywhere in the world. ( There are tours and tasting held
in the many farms and mills on the island.)
Next in line on the agricultural scene are papaya, macadamia nuts, banana, ginger and exotic
flowers. The Big Island also sustains nearly 60% of the state's cattle on its (not quite as famous
as the coffee) cowboy ranches.
The tourist district, where most of the hotels and resorts are located, is found on the west side of
the Big Island.
