Belize is located in northeastern Central America, south of Mexico and east of Guatemala. The
Caribbean Sea lies to
its east. A member of the Commonwealth of Nations and independent since 1981, Belize was
formerly a British
colony called British Honduras. Less than 9,000 square miles in size, Belize has a population of
just under 250,000.
