Denmark is a small prosperous country in northwestern Europe, surrounded primarily by the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Germany is its only land neighbor. Its roughly 17,000 square miles is made up of a long peninsula called Jutland, two large islands called Fyn and Zealland and 483 smaller islands. The terrain of the peninsula is windswept dunes and low cliffs and irregular hills, with some wooded fertile land on the eastern shore. The islands are dotted with small lakes and rimmed with sandy beaches and weathered fishing villages.
