Italy

rome_coloseum2.jpg Italy is located in Europe south of Switzerland and Austria, west of Slovenia and southeast of France. The country is shaped like a boot, and most of the boot is surrounded by water: the Adriatic Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ligurian Sea. The Mediterranean Islands of Sicily and Sardinia, southwest of the mainland, belong to Italy.

The government is independent democracy and the capital is Rome. Port cities include Naples, Rome, Portofino and Venice. Other cities known worldwide and popular with visitors are Florence, Pisa, Capri and the Vatican, home of Roman Catholic leader Pope John Paul II.

The climate of Italy ranges from freezing cold in the high mountains to hot and sticky along the coast that faces the Ligurian Sea. The average annual temperature, ranges from about 52 degrees Fahrenheit to 66 degrees Fahrenheit.

Currency is the Lire.
